STATUS:

Part-time, 20 hours/week

JOB DESCRIPTION :

The Research Support Associate provides science and technical support for biological experiments on spaceflight missions for research grants awarded to civil servant science lead/lab principal investigator. Job functions include working with a variety of biological organisms including Drosophila melanogaster, other insects and microbes to support space biology research.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION :

Minimum of BSc degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or any other related field in biology with a minimum of 1 year experience working with Drosophila (fruitfly) models;
Excellent technical skills on Drosophila stock maintenance and infection procedures, excellent communication and the ability to work well in a team setting to facilitate the process of launching a science payload and analyzing the resulting data.
Training in molecular biology, biotechnology or a closely related area is essential.
Strong working knowledge of fruit fly culturing and handling is required
Excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to record and report results concisely and clearly
Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
Ability to travel to off-site locations as needed
Experience in working with Drosophila payloads; conducting Drosophila (fly) infection experiments

Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Status.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

Essential/Typical Duties :

Provide project planning, science experimentation, project reporting support for Drosophila (fruitfly) payload development for flight and ground studies. Specific duties may include:
Conduct experiments, grow, expand and maintain fly stocks as needed
Perform fly infection procedures
Perform rotating wall vessel on microbes and mammalian cells
Perform biocompatibility studies on various flight hardware configurations as needed
Assist in the processing of Drosophila samples for RNAseq and proteomics
Manage the lab and ensure that lab supplies and procurements are made appropriately for the project
Support and conduct post-flight assays to test for specimen quality, health and viability
Participate in project team meetings. Generate weekly/monthly project progress reports as needed
Maintains tissue cultures.
Conducts cell-based assays (to include, but not limited to: cell count, viability, proliferation, cytotoxicity).
Performs biocompatibility testing.
Assists with documentation of daily activities.
Write protocols and procedures.
Tracks inventory of lab supplies, reagents, and assists with procurement.
Manages chemical and bio-hazardous waste.
Maintains laboratory equipment.
Supports biology testing in COTS systems and flight hardware.
Provides science support during ground and control operations at ARC and Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
Assists with post-test specimen processing and analyses.
Provides inputs and status reports on assigned deliverables.

Non-Essential Duties :

Other related assignments and duties, as required.

Lifting/Moving Requirements :

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :

Normally works in an environmentally controlled area. May require working in outdoor or uncontrolled indoor and exterior work places.
