With large and wide-ranging responsibilities, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) works collaboratively to protect the environment and to maintain and grow the rural economy. Our vital work is far-reaching and complex. Join us and you will contribute to the development of new approaches and policies affecting millions of people across the country. This is a career-defining opportunity that offers networking and professional development.
The Common Agricultural Programme will soon be replaced by The Future Farming and Countryside Programme. The new services and interventions that will exist within this programme are being designed to support Farmers and Land Managers, and it is here that you could play a vital role in helping us tackle some of the UK's most pressing agricultural and environmental issues. Taking on a myriad of diverse projects, you will:
- Lead a team of Service Designers and Business Analysts in defining and delivering services and new ways of working that are cost-effective and that will establish the best possible relationship between Government and Land Managers.
- Work with business owners and those in the sector to understand their needs, before translating this knowledge into service offerings that match business requirements.
- Maintain oversight of design standards and quality assurance while identifying existing business and service components that can be reused, in order to create services that will cater for both current and future needs.
- Take on nationally-important projects, networking with and influencing a multidisciplinary team (including Arm's Length Bodies and external partners) to find viable solutions to multi-layered issues.
The challenges we face are complex, yet highly interesting. To make the most of this valuable opportunity, you will therefore use your analytical capabilities to help us forge improved environmental, animal and plant health outcomes. Coming from a background in which you championed large-scale business transformation and organisational change, you will have experience of creating new market offerings, delivery models, and IT-enabled services. With a successful track record in business design and architecture, you will understand how to package business change into new service offerings. You will therefore be fluent in using design-based methodologies to identify and create the relevant service interventions, and you will understand how best to engage with the market - all backed up with exceptional communication and leadership skills. You should also be comfortable using both agile and waterfall delivery approaches.
Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You will have access to learning and development from quality providers and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.
