**American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi**seeks a self-motivated team member with community and civic engagement advocacy experience to fill the position of **Advocacy Coordinator**in support of our systemic impact campaign initiatives.

## **Position Overview and Functions****:**
The Advocacy Coordinator reports to the Director of Advocacy and Communications and is a part of the integrated efforts to advance ACLU priorities at the state and local level. The majority of the Advocacy Coordinator?s time will be spent working with community groups to develop and implement strategies, coordinate programmatic activities and campaigns to support civil liberties issues.
**Field:** Promote evidence-based approaches, and help develop the case for research activity. Develop and utilize program monitoring and evaluation tools, baseline surveys, and project reports. Strengthen relationships within target communities by attending community events and interacting with interest-based groups that may not be aware of the issues for which we are advocating.
**Public Policy:** Assist in the monitoring of ballot initiatives, referendums, local and state government policy proposals that pose a threat to civil liberties and recommend actions when appropriate. Write brief educational materials, flyers and action alerts. Assist with coordination of public hearings. Conduct research, analysis and provide recommendations on legislative issues. Research, create and disseminate innovative information on policy or litigation issues to increase awareness and stewardship strategies to encourage members, citizens and community leaders to civically engage as appropriate locally.
**Events/****Trainings****:** Organize public education and organizing events?such as rallies, community forums, panel discussions and trainings in line with approved objectives. Respond to assistance requests from concerned citizens, and advocacy groups by providing guidance and informational resources.
**Coalition Building:** Help to coordinate and build coalitions on specific issue areas as assigned. Coordinate local and statewide youth programs/meetings. Maintain relationships with key allies on priority issues. Provide timely strategic input for coalition work to ACLU of MS colleagues.
**Other:**Handle the word processing and production of letters, reports, packets and other materials. Maintain orderly files. Draft communications as assigned. Prepare materials with an attention to accuracy and professionalism. Complete special projects as assigned or required. Help maintain a positive, respectful, welcoming and professional work environment for employees and volunteers. Assist in other activities as assigned.

* B.A. and at least two years of relevant work experience preferred. Experience in nonprofit, advocacy or other community-based groups is valuable.
* Firm commitment to the mission and principles of the ACLU.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strength in proofreading and an ardent attention to detail.
* Excellent research and data collection skills are required.
* Good organizational skills for time management, research, and event coordination.
* Proficient computer skills including major software packages (MS Office), database management, e-mail, and Internet.
* Excellent organization skills: a strong, consistent attention to detail, ability to meet tight deadlines, and the ability to follow through on work assignments with a minimum of direct supervision.
* The ability to work on several significant projects at various stages of completion.
* Good problem-solving skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working with diverse populations, and with staff and volunteers.
